Grinding Gears and Burning Diesel

By Ian "eno" Taylor

Men's mental health is important to me, and Truck Drivers are a forgotten society. We keep the country moving, but we also need help and support.  I want to make a difference in the lives of heavy vehicle drivers, whether its interstate freight drivers, excavator operators, or the local garbage truck.  We need help and we need to know it is ok to TALK and someone will be there to LISTEN.  I've partnered up with Lifeline North Coast to host this event, to raise awareness and get the help our Truckies need.   I myself have called the 13 11 14 Lifeline crisis phone line. I want to do my share in breaking the stigma of men talking about their mental health and their daily concerns and ensuring they can get the best advice and help they need.

Every dollar raised goes directly to saving lives within our local community and will be directed back into the 13 11 14 crisis phone line, but also a portion of the money raised, Lifeline North Coast will provide training and support directly to our community of truck drivers to help prevent further suicides and provide our frontline workers with tools and practical tips on how to manage their mental health and support their mates on a daily basis.

The Cold Hard Facts

Wednesday 10th Nov

Did you know that while one in five Australians are experiencing a mental health condition at any time, truck drivers are 7% more likely to develop depression.

Workers regularly deal with long working hours, which can lead to stress and related health concerns. The same survey also revealed 65% of drivers work longer hours than recommended, leading to a higher risk of burnout and road accidents.

Also worth noting is that Australia’s transport and trucking industry has long been dominated by men, with women accounting for just three percent of truck drivers. This means not only are mental illness rates higher among truck drivers – but because most truck drivers are men, the likelihood of them seeking help is lower.
